Condensation on basement walls? Marion, MA 02738

10/16/2017 (Permalink)

Why are the interior foundation walls in my basement wet?

Condensation builds up on interior foundation walls due to the dramatic difference in temperature inside and outside of our homes. Basements are built with the majority of the exterior wall under the grounds surface. The inside of our basement foundation walls are usually a lot warmer in the winter due to our heating systems running (usually older furnaces lose enough heat to warm the basement even without heating output vents installed down there). Condensation accumulates on the inside of foundation walls. It then follows the laws of gravity and can trickle down the wall creating a small puddle along the perimeter of the basement floor.

This usually causes the most issues for homeowners with finished basements. The moisture and condensation is hidden between the foundation wall and the interior drywall. If the contractor who finished the basement used wood framing the combination of damp cool environment and organic material can be a feeding ground for mold to thrive. The hazard is the mold you don't see.
